Epidemiology is the study of distribution of diseases in a population and ways of preventing them. Epidemiologists identify a disease in a population and then keep track as it moves through the population. Then they find the risk factors and preventive control methods of that disease. They play a primary role in public health by warning about the risk factors and educating people with the preventive methods of a disease, syndrome or an epidemic. They not just identify a disease, but they research the cause of the disease through a number of factors including ethnicity, age and sex of the people. So, they start from the problem of disease and go till the solution.

Epidemiologists have major research programs on diseases like cancer, maternal and child health, cardiovascular disease, injuries, infectious diseases (HIV/AIDS and other STDs), neurological diseases, and musculoskeletal conditions. In addition to this, genetic, psychological and behavioral forces are also taken care by them, as these things are related with diseases.

To become an epidemiologist, you need to have good interest in science; you need to have the ability to follow a problem to conclusion; you have to work with lots of people; you need to be patient and flexible enough to work with government authorities. Most of all, you are doing a noble job of bringing awareness to the people about deadly diseases and epidemics.

Epidemiology offers a wide variety of jobs and careers. People who have an MPH, MS or PhD can have a bright future in this field. You can become a scientist, epidemiologist, public health coordinator, research associate and so much more. Some of the employers of epidemiologists are W.H.O., American Cancer Society, State Departments of Health and so many other big international concerns.

Epidemiology, as a field, is expected to faster than the average of all occupations through 2008. So, this is an excellent career with good growth prospects. The salary range of epidemiologists is an average of $55,000 and it will go up with experience.
